About Alec Haavik

I’m a musician from the US. I studied the Chinese language when I was in college and spent a semester in Taipei studying Chinese, which was a mind opening experience.
Living in a foreign country was a very intense experience at that time, but the amazing rewards of being in a different country and a different culture stayed with me.
Years later, after struggling as a jazz musician in New York City, I found that this was still calling me, this experience of being an expat.
About The Album
Taken from their bandcamp profile:
The Shindiggers take you on an adventure in the rhythm of swing!
Alec Haavik, an icon of Shanghai jazz, leads this exciting and fun group comprising Shanghai’s most brilliant jazz players, and featuring the wonderful vocalist Jade Lee.
The Shindiggers draw inspiration from classic artist from the 1920’s through the 1950’s, and have already built a repertoire of music by such greats as Jimmy Lunceford, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington.
With this debut album, the Shindiggers enter “Phase II” — presenting songs in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese: original compositions and arrangements in the swing rhythm, pushing boundaries by incorporating modern jazz harmony, Chinese musical instruments, and even electronic music production techniques!
